Privacy Policy

THE DFPI PROTECTS YOUR PRIVACY

Our Policy (approved Sept. 10, 2015)

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) is committed to protecting the privacy of your personal information. DFPI’s information management practices conform to the requirements of the Information Practices Act (Civil Code section 1798 et seq.), the Public Records Act (Government Code section 7920.000 et seq.), and all other applicable laws pertaining to information privacy. DFPI’s limits the collection of personal information and safeguards the privacy of personal information it collects or maintains.

DFPI collects personal information on individuals only as allowed by law. DFPI only collects personal information which is relevant and necessary to perform its duties. Personal information is defined in the Information Practices Act (Civil Code section 1798 et seq.) as information that identifies or describes an individual including, but not limited to, name, Social Security number, physical description, home address, home telephone number, education, financial matters, and medical or employment history. When DFPI requests personal information, we specify what it will be used for and the legal authority for requesting it. DFPI also specifies why it is requesting the personal information, before or at the time it requests it. The purpose of the request is specified in a privacy notice included on the form used to collect the personal information.

DFPI does not collect personal information of people who browse our website. DFPI only collects personal information about you through our website if you provide it voluntarily through e-mail or forms.

DFPI protects your personal information. DFPI takes precautions to safeguard your personal information collected through the Internet against loss, or unauthorized use, modification or disclosure. These precautions include in-transit encryption of the information you provide and limiting access to your information to DFPI employees who have a business need to use it. DFPI employees receive annual training on the importance of protecting your privacy and personal information. Confidential information is destroyed according to DFPI’s records retention schedule.

DFPI will not disclose, make available, or otherwise use your personal information for purposes other than those specified unless you consent, or such disclosure is authorized by law or regulation, is requested by other state or federal regulatory agencies, or is necessary to report an actual or suspected violation of law to an appropriate law enforcement agency.

You have access to personal information you provide DFPI. You have the right to review any personal information DFPI maintains about you and request correction of errors or inaccuracies. Please contact the Privacy Officer (contact information below) to see records containing personal information about you, or request corrections to these records. Your request should include as much information as possible to help us identify your records. If you are legally entitled to inspect these records, we will provide access within 30 days of receiving your request.
