Fed, CSBS Present "Community Banking in the 21st Century"

The Federal Reserve System and the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) announced that “Community Banking in the 21st Century,” a national community banking research and policy conference, will be webcast live from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Oct. 2-3, 2013. The webcast will be available for viewing via the St. Louis Fed web site at www.stlouisfed.org/live beginning at 2 p.m. Central Time (12 p.m. Pacific Time) on Wednesday, Oct. 2, when Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke kicks off the conference along with CSBS President and CEO John Ryan and Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard.

Community bankers, academics, policymakers and bank supervisors from across the country will gather at this first-of-its-kind research conference to focus on the challenges and opportunities facing the 21st century community bank. Research of note for the community banking sector will be presented along with the findings of a comprehensive series of community banker town halls hosted this past spring and summer by state bank commissioners.

Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell will give the Oct. 3 afternoon keynote beginning at 12:30 p.m. CT. On October 2, the conference will feature the first research panel presentation of four selected academic papers, with a focus on the role of community banks, followed by an evening keynote speech from Dorothy Savarese, chairman, president and CEO of Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, Orleans, Mass.

On October 3, in addition to the afternoon keynote by Gov. Powell, the schedule of events will feature two research panel presentations, the first focused on community banking performance and the second on supervision and regulation.

The conference will conclude with a panel presentation where the findings from town hall meetings, which were conducted by state bank commissioners with community bankers across the country, will be released and discussed.

• Richard A. Brown, chief economist and associate director for regional operations, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., Washington, D.C.;
• Lamont Black, assistant professor of finance, Driehaus College of Business, DePaul University, Chicago, Ill.;
• Bobby P. Martin, chairman of the board, The Peoples Bank, Ripley, Miss.;
• Thomas E. Spitz, chief executive officer, Settlers Bank, Windsor, Wis.; and
• Claire W. Tucker, president and CEO, CapStar Bank, Nashville, Tenn.
