DFI Monthly Bulletin – March 2003

Mar 1, 2003

Volume 6, Number 9

April is Financial Literacy Month in California

Governor Davis will again declare the month of April as “California Financial Literacy Month.” This
special observance month is meant to promote youth and adult financial literacy and encourage
California’s families to understand the basics of money management, saving and investing and use of
credit in order that they make wise financial decisions to protect their financial future.
The month-long effort focuses on youth and adult financial literacy. State and federal agencies,
regulators, consumer groups and the financial industry will join together to conduct educational events
which raise awareness about the importance of financial literacy. Representatives will participate in
presentations, workshops, and other efforts throughout the state to reach all ages and backgrounds. In
addition, new educational materials, including online information is unveiled as part of the outreach
and education campaign.
The American Bankers Association Education Foundation (ABAEF) sponsors “National Teach
Children to Save Day” – on April 10, 2003 when thousands of bankers connect with kids in classrooms
and afterschool programs to share “real life” lessons about money. These efforts help young people
take an important first step in mastering their financial ABCs – learning how to save. Learn more about
National Teach Children to Save Day by visiting the ABA Web site at
<http://www.aba.com/Consumer+Connection/teachchildrentosave.htm >, or you can email the ABA
to request information at seinfalt@aba.com.
The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) sponsors “Youth Count at Credit Unions” —National
Credit Union Youth Week — April 13-19, 2003. This special week shines the spotlight on how young
people earn, spend, save, and manage their own money—and how credit unions help them do so
wisely during National Credit Union Youth Week. To learn more about National Credit Union Youth
Week, visit the CUNA Web site at <http://www.cuna.org/initiatives/youth/youth_week.html>.
